World No.1 Jannik Sinner to miss rest of 2026 to recover from knee injury
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will miss the rest of the 2026 season as he continues treatment for a knee injury that has kept him out of action since his Wimbledon triumph in July.
Sinner has not played since beating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final on July 12. The 25-year-old subsequently missed the North American hardcourt swing, including the US Open, before also sitting out the Asian swing.
The Italian confirmed on Tuesday that he will undergo further treatment for his knee after consulting with his doctors. "Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee which means the 2026 season is officially over," Sinner said in a video posted on X.
Sinner admitted that the decision would make the end of his year very different from the previous two seasons, when he enjoyed success at the ATP Finals in Turin. https://t.co/LC1SqFTKG8β Jannik Sinner (@janniksin) October 6, 2026
"The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions which this year is going to be way different," he said.
"But at the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career. So I'll do everything possible to get back 100%."
Sinner's team said he would undergo treatment for inflammation in his knee, with the decision taken to give him enough time to recover before starting his preparations for the 2027 season.
The injury rules Sinner out of the European indoor hardcourt tournaments and the ATP Finals in Turin, where he won the title in the last two years.
His absence could also have an impact on the race for the No. 1 ranking. Zverev, who is second in the ATP rankings, has reduced the gap to Sinner and will have further opportunities to gain points during the final tournaments of the season.
Sinner will now have to wait until 2027 for his return to competitive tennis, with the Australian Open scheduled to begin in January.
The Italian's priority will be to recover fully from the knee problem before beginning his preparations for the new season.- Ends
