Zohran Mamdani Opens U20 Summit as Jakarta Pitches $7bn Projects - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo presented the capital's second-quarter 2026 economic achievements to international municipal leaders during the U20 Mayoral Plenary at Civic Hall in New York, United States, hosted by NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

During the event, he emphasized that Jakarta has managed to sustain robust economic momentum despite headwinds facing the global economy.

"Amid the world facing various economic challenges, Jakarta continues to record strong economic growth. In the second quarter of this year, Jakarta's economy grew by 5.52 percent, with inflation remaining low at 2.5 percent. This stability has encouraged investment of US$10.5 billion into Jakarta in just six months," Pramono said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

The governor leveraged the U20 platform to pitch fresh investment ventures and deepen ties with municipal leaders and international stakeholders.

"Jakarta is ready to open investment opportunities through 37 urban development projects with a potential investment value of US$7 billion. We invite city partners, businesses, and global partners to not only invest in Jakarta, but also to build the future of our city together," said Pramono.

During the plenary session, participating mayors and governors gathered to hear welcoming remarks from host the NYC Mayor.

In his opening address, Zohran thanked the visiting municipal leaders and detailed the three cornerstone pillars of Urban 20 2026: affordable housing and homelessness; climate action, sustainability, and urban resilience; and protecting immigrant communities and human mobility.

The Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit runs from September 19 to 21, 2026, in New York City. The forum is expected to produce a joint communique and policy framework outlining shared commitments from city leaders to advance sustainable urban development.
